So Here's What You Missed on--Brittney 2.0!

So here's what you missed on GLEE!

Brittany's back, bitch.  Sam Evans needs All the Friendships.  Blaine is so tired of your bullshit, Mr. Schue.  The Puckerman genes are strong in this one, and oh HEY LOOK PUCK'S BACK.

Meanwhile in New York, opinions seem to be split between whether Brody is a Respectable Guy or a Creeper.  Cassandra July  is still hot and I ship her with everyone.  Kurt and Rachel are the cutest cuties to have ever cuted.

Let's discuss any meta or questions you might have today, guys.

I keep seeing things all over the Tumblrs about how people don't like Marley and Jake, but I like them! The one thing I didn't like so far is Marley being upset over Jake having a girlfriend. Literally the very first thing she was ever told about him was that he was a womanizer, and then there was a whole song about it. So, you know, she should have seen it coming. But other than that, Marley is cute and nice and a good singer and not annoying, and Jake is interesting and I'm hoping to learn a lot more about his anger issues and inner conflict. I fear they may have screwed up his plot by doing the "Puck's motivating brotherly speech" part too soon, but I'm going to wait and see.

I wish that the writing/direction for Jake and Marley was a little more subtle. I don't mind them as characters, so far, but I find the push to couple them together a little strong. The way they look at each other in the hallway is kind of jarring to me.

I suspect a lot of Marley's being upset was feeling humiliated and stupid because she had been warned but fell for him anyway. Perhaps she believed she could be the one special girl he wouldn't treat that way? IDK. And of course that it was Kitty doesn't help. Kitty is a bully who has bullied her, her mother, and her new friends; but Jake--who she saw stand up to bullies--is apparently 'dating' Kitty. So even as friends, there's a betrayal there.

More generally, I'm still kind of reserving judgement for Marley and Jake. Jake, I think I'm going to like because he's actually not the same as Puck was at that age; he's not afraid to work hard at something and admit to working hard for it and have some pride in his efforts; he embraces his inner artist; he acts out when he feels moral outrage versus simply from formless aggression. So, he could be interesting. Also, even as a womanizer, he treats the girls nicely and romances them, which is not like Puck's strategy at all. So far he hasn't got an insecure unwilling girl (who is his best friend's girlfriend) drunk to have unprotected first time sex (resulting in pregnancy) with her either. Nor has he bullied anyone; rather he's stood up to the bullies (I don't know what's up with him & Kitty though: perhaps Jake's ideas about chivalry will come back to bite him in the butt). So I think he's already doing better than Puck was by 1x02!

I agree that the scene with Puck was odd. It felt too abrupt and easy. Like Puck just appeared out of nothing, and then disappeared again straight away; and I'm not sure his pep talk was all that, really. I also got distracted a bit wondering why they were playing Kurt & Blaine's piano piece there.

Marley isn't drawing me in yet. I don't dislike her, but she hasn't sparked anything with me. She seems sweet and sincere and that's about it so far?

I like Marley and Jake and dislike Kitty. I'm very interested in what's going on with their characters, because Ryan Murphy simply doesn't *do* love triangles without subverting them or making the position of all three participants thoroughly sympathetic. See Quinn/Finn/Rachel in season 2.

Here's an observation I've made about Jake!

These are lyrics he wasn't allowed to sing in 4x01:
Picture, you're the queen of everything
As far as the eye can see
Under your command I will be your guardian
When all is crumbling
To steady your hand

He did get to sing the following in 4x02:
That kinda lovin'
Turns a man to a slave
That kinda lovin'
Sends a man right to his grave

What I'm taking from this is that Jake wants to be with a girl who's in charge of the relationship yet still lets him "steady her hand". The fact that he seems to enjoy Unique roping him in during "Womanizer" lends credence to this reading of the lyrics, but maybe I'm just seeing things.

I was hoping to get some others opinions on Brody - sweet or stalker? Because I have this feeling Glee is going to blindside us with his true nature, sort of like it did with Karofsky kissing Kurt. There's no real flaw to his character yet, and everyone else we know at least one interesting thing about them (Marley's mom, Jake's brother, Kitty being new top bitch dating Jake).

Also, the meaning of orchid via wikipedia:
The name comes from the Greek ὄρχις (órkhis), literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the root.

The Greek myth of Orchis explains the origin of the plants. Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysios (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysios. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower.

LOL at the orchid meta. Hahaha.

[personal profile] tilia_cordata 2012-09-22 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
There are also a bunch of orchids that are shaped like female bees, so the male bees come and try to have sex with them, and instead get the orchid pollinia stuck to them. Plus there are the Georgia O'Keefe paintings of orchids that are all labia-like. Orchids are sexy flowers!

Ah, something about the orchid in that last shot felt ominous. I wasn't familiar with this myth, so this is awesome. I don't think Brody will attempt to rape Rachel, but I don't think he's necessarily as sweet as he seems. I was thinking about "Oops" and wondering if it's meant for Brody: he's going to play with Rachel's trusting ingenue heart; she's going to fall for him hard; he's not 'sent from above' to be her friend and mentor, he just enjoys the seduction? IDK. Brody may even believe he's sincere, but apparently he has a pattern?

"Oops... I Did It Again" works very well for Brody. After all, no one actually thinks Rachel is sent from above.

Yeah, it was a really weird and awkward song for Rachel. Her red lipstick made me recall the Sad Clown Hooker makeover. Kurt, was this your fault?

Unique's pronouns

[personal profile] likeasouffle 2012-09-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't noticed anyone but Unique talking about Unique in third person so far this season. Have you? I want to see what gender pronouns people use. Oh wait, Mr Schue said "Please welcome Wade 'Unique' Adams" but I don't think he use any gendered words.

I haven't either, so this is something to look for. Has anyone yet called her girl or woman other than herself? She is being included with the girls in gym class it seems, which is promising. I will pay closer attention on rewatches.

ETA: Joe calls her "girl" in 4x01 when Unique enters the choir room with her MVP award.

Unique is "one of the girls" in "Britney 2.0": Marley reacts positively to Unique wanting to talk about boys; Unique leads the other girls in "Womanizer"; she's with the girls in gym class (did Tina don her vampire costume to make Figgins allow Unique into her gym class?).

Unique is herself all episode, as opposed to 4x01, in which she sang "Call Me Maybe" as Wade.

Another missing scene. Clearly this is what happened. :)

Anyone else notice that they played the Klaine theme through the Puck/Jake scene?

Re: The newbies

[personal profile] secretagentlaura 2012-09-22 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
They totally did!

So, are we supposed to think that Puck is still hanging around Lima instead of cleaning pools in Cali? Because I can't let myself believe that he'd travel all that way at Mr. Schue's request.

Yes! What on earth was that about? They played it once in a Kurt/Burt scene (when he opens his NYADA letter in "Michael" iirc), which I interpreted as a way to include Blaine in the scene without his being physically present due to his injury. It really jarred with Puck & Jake. Do they want us to think of Kurt & Blaine in that scene? Or was it carelessness? Or are they trying to change the meaning of the music (if so, to what?) Hrm.

I didn't realize that was the Klaine theme until I read it on other people's blogs! To me, that theme just signals an emotional scene without specific Kurt/Blaine connotations. Clearly, I was mistaken.

Since this show is a musical, the Klaine theme definitely wasn't there without purpose. My guess right now is that Puck really is lurking in Lima to defend his 'ship after all.

Hmm. So perhaps it's foreshadowing Puck helping Kurt & Blaine through some troubles or somesuch? The LDR won't be easy.

Puck really is lurking in Lima to defend his 'ship after all

I want a missing scene! Puck trying to cheer Blaine up after Kurt's left? But in a very Puckish way, like he turns up with a bucket of chicken and some gay porn and Blaine's all weirded out, but still touched by the gesture. IDK.

Doesn't Puck's Shakespearean counterpart help mend a relationship or two? I love Glee when it lets Puck be Shakespeare's Puck ...
