The mods and I have been discussing making Meta Wednesday's character-focused, focusing on a specific and different character each week. How do the rest of ya'll feel about that?
This season to me feels like it's an episode off. Like, there are parallels there, but it's 2.06 and 3.05 that parallel, not 2.06 and 3.06.
...That said, I just realized another parallel--both 2.05 and 3.05 bring up "dressing in drag" (Mr. Schue wanting Kurt to Frank-n-Furter, "Drag Queen Wednesday") = "being gay", something we see brought up again late in season three. Thoughts?
Sugar tends to wear a lot of animal prints, which tend to come in either zebra print (black and white) or cheetah pattern (yellow/brown with black spots). How does that work with the color theory? Do we have a theory just for animal prints?
Exactly! Is animal print related to sex? Or is it a form of camouflage? And what does it mean that Kurt and Sugar (and Mercedes I think? I need to double-check that) are the only ones we really see wearing it?
Do you think Kurt's animal brooches are related? (Hippo, zebra, etc.) I feel like he wears them when he's trying to boost his confidence (attending Dalton for the first time, looking for sheet music for his NYADA callback...) So maybe the animal print is also about trying to be tougher or more confident. Sugar seems to thrive off of applause (even if she has to pay for it, she said once) so maybe she's insecure. And Kurt was feeling very unsure in that scene in 3x05. He asked if he was sexually boring.
Santana wears animal prints in Sexy three times! Black and grey zebra, purple leopard, and purple zebra. This is the episode where she first starts to admit her feelings about Brittany.
Hmm, now I'm starting to think animal prints = something to do with sex. Maybe desiring sex? Or wanting sex but not knowing how to say it? (Santana wears animal prints in Sexy when we learn she wants a relationship with Brittany, Kurt wears animal prints in The First Time when we find out he's been thinking about going all the way with Blaine. And yet, both Sugar and Mercedes wear animal prints all the time...
Maybe it has something to do with attention, both sexual and emotional? Kurt wants someone to pay attention to him sexually, Santana wants more than just sex with Brittany, and both Sugar and Mercedes both just want someone, anyone, to pay attention to them.
On a whim, I googled the significance of wearing animals prints, and found a few interesting things about leopard print:
- a long, long time ago, animals prints were a way of signifying propersity and status, just as displaying actual animal trophies were - animal prints started appearing in modern fashion during the women's movement in the 1940's - leopard print, in particular, was associated with female sexual empowerment in the 1950's - in the 1960's, it became a little popular within the free love movement, and onward in time, more strongly associated with the androgyny and cross-dressing in the Rock n Roll/punk movements.
That's all really interesting. Sexual empowerment works for Santana when she's freaking out about her relationship with Brittany, and it works for Kurt when he's thinking about going all the with Blaine. (And maybe it also goes with the androgyny aspect for him, since later on Sebastian throws gender-related insults at him?) Does it work for Sugar? We don't really know much about her.
Santana, when she wears her own clothes, nearly always wears black--specifically, a black leather jacket (or, in season 3, a mob!boss outfit). Does black has a specific meaning that I'm unaware of?
What do *you* think Kurt will do now that we know he hasn't gotten into NYADA? Do you think he'll still pursue performing, or do you think he'll try his hand at something else? If something else--what do you think?
Personally I want him to join SHIELD and work for Tony Stark but that might be just a tad bit unrealistic.
I used to think he'd go into fashion, but the show hasn't been going that way lately. He made his own junior prom outfit, but I don't remember him doing things like that in season three. He wasn't even asked to give dress advice this year. *shrug?*
I agree - Rachel's exploring the theatre-after-high-school thing, so it would be fun to see Kurt further his interest in fashion instead of following Rachel. But season three didn't really emphasize this much at all - it was more about his interest in NYADA and the class elections.
Other things I've thought of:
- takes intro classes in the theatre program at OSU's Lima campus - hangs out in DC with Burt (which would be a great way to keep Burt around for the season, yes?)
