Meta Wednesday: Family

Inspired from an interview at ComicCon, today let's talk about Glee and family, and the relationships that makes.

As always, feel free to discuss anything else you might like--this is just a starting point!

Re: Suggestions for Future Weeks

I sort of already suggested this on the general summer post last week but what about the show's use of foreign languages? For example:

- Languages and language teaching in "The Spanish Teacher"
- Who sings in a foreign language (when, what and why)?
- Who do we hear speaking (as opposed to singing) a foreign language (and who don't we hear who might nevertheless be assumed to have knowledge of a language other than English)?
- Is it important that Mr Schue starts off as a Spanish teacher etc?

This is how Kurt's feelings on Finn changed from Ballad to Big Brother:

"I'm madly in love with Finn. I have been since the first time we met. He was my knight in shining armor. My feelings lingered stronger as we bonded over glee. Then football. Then skin care. I don't know why I find his stupidity charming. I mean, he's cheating off a girl who thinks the square root of four is rainbows. I guess that's love for you."

"Family stuff is hard, especially between brothers. I mean, Finn and I aren't even real brothers, and we pretty much disagree on everything. But I love the big lug! And at the end of the day we're in each other's corners. You only get one brother, Blaine. Don't give up on that."

He uses the word love both times, but the sentiment is completely different. :D

Re: Siblings

There are a lot of siblings on this show. Especially compared to my old fandom, Buffy. My assumption was always that the writers of Buffy were so focused on the individuals and their friendships (and occasionally their parents) that they just forgot to give them siblings, and by the time we get to know them better and see them at home, it's too late to write siblings in (except in the case of Dawn).

Kurt, Finn, and Rachel were basically the first characters on Glee we got to know well, so maybe the same thing was happening, where the individuals were the focus and that's why no one bothered to give them siblings. But it's nice that so many other characters eventually got sibling mentions. It adds to the scope of the universe a bit, knowing there are other people out there beyond the walls of the school.

I feel like Cooper is Dawn. I mean, Blaine and Kurt had been together for a long time before he appeared out of nowhere, they'd even known each other for two Christmases, and Cooper was never even mentioned before. "I'll finally be abe to meet this mysterious brother of yours!" Clearly he's actually a mystical concentration of living energy transformed into an ordinary boy. LOL.

Also Chris Colfer wants Julie Andrews to play his grandma and Anne Hathaway to play his aunt. :) (And joked that Meryl Streep should play his boyfriend.)

I secretly would like to have Lisa Kudrow cast as Brittany's mother (was that also a rumour at one point)? I also feel a bit hypocritical because I tend to groan inwardly at stuntcasting.

Sugar Motta strikes me as an only child. Or at least, her daddy's favourite.
