Here's What You Missed On: The Spanish Teacher

So, we all agreed yesterday that what we really wanted was a weekly 'references' post, for all the jokes, allusions, and visual callbacks to things we didn't quite catch.  Here it is!

I'm going to try an experiment with our first references post, and divide it into subthreads to keep things a little more organized.  We will see if this works!  Dive right in!

Fun notes-

Will's song was offensive on many levels, yeah, but also the fundamental one- he has a week of Latin music, then chooses a song by Elvis Presley- quite possibly the most recognizable American musical figure- Seriously, he's instantly recognizable to the international world, think the Beatles for England.

Like... holy crap, Will. Way to be the most worst possible.

Extra bonus irony for his dancing being a weird, awkward combination of Elvis moves and... whatever he was trying to say with the mariachi bullfight stuff. >_>

And a thing about the lyrics of that song:

"A little less conversation, a little more action please / All this aggravation ain't satisfactionin' me / A little more bite and a little less bark / A little less fight and a little more spark / Close your mouth and open up your heart and baby satisfy me". That fits so well with, like, everything that is Will.

-all the lines about aggravation and "a little less fight" ---> "You have to be liked Will, you avoid confrontation."
-Hey, David, stop conversing with my students because every time you do that and teach them something it makes me look even more incompetent.
-Will can't even converse in Spanish at all. (That said, his action proves to be pretty goddamn fail as well. But he'd like to think it isn't.)
-It's kind of the perfect mix of well-intentioned and demanding and inappropriate and pretty much everything that Will ever asks of his kids is in those lines. NO STOP FIGHTING, STOP BEING ANGRY, KIDS, JUST SING SONGS. YOU DON'T HAVE OPINIONS. JUST DO WHAT I SAY. Exactly what Artie was raging about in Michael. Nice to see he learned his lesson.
-"Satisfy me". yes, because this whole glee club is about you, Will. >< (Also it's intensely creepy, which is Will all over.)

Also: let's sing a song by an artist who was widely considered the manliest of the manly men back in the 50s because NO ONE IS MORE MACHO OF/FROM WILL SCHUESTER. :P

They mix up Bombolero and a Enrique Iglesias song "Hero."

I looked up Bombolero (which has a fine version by the Gipsy Kings if you're ever interested), and according to answer.com:

"Just like in English, a word literally means something different than the implied meaning. This song was taken from the Venezuelan song Caballo Viejo... so literally "old horse". It implies a man who is too old and set in his ways to change. Literally the word means "to swing or sway in a wavelike dance", but probably conjures a vision of an old bachelor/swinger who will never truly settle down. The line "Bamboleo, Bambolea, Porque mi vida yo la prefiero vivir asi" is basically saying who he is and that he lives his life as he prefers.

Also, here's a video about those pointy boots. So Mr. Martinez teaches them about something that is currently happening (at least in Mexico and it sounds like parts of the U.S.A). They are awesome.

Let's talk Choreography for the Cheerios for a second. The style that Roz introduces? It's Krumping. It's pretty interesting as far as street dancing goes. My knowledge of street dances is almost exclusively based on wiki-ing dances after watching movies like Step Up, which I blame Harry Shum Jr. for making me watch

Krumping is always about what you're feeling when you do it- it's considered bad form to not have something you want to express when you do it. But most often Krumping is about expressing anger.

In some ways that makes it the perfect dance for Sue Sylvester, really. I would pay money to see Jane Lynch krump

I was a bit confused, though. Because Krumping usually isn't choreographed- that's sort of the whole point, that Krumping is reacting to the music and how you're feeling. So maybe Roz isn't using it right on purpose?

It's also usually used in dance battles, too. Which makes me think Roz is using it correctly, because that was definitely a confrontation she was having with Sue.

I'm curious as to why Brit Brit was the principal dancer.

Thoughts?

This is really cool information.

Well, you said it yourself. If Krumping is about reacting to the music and how you're feeling...Brittany's the best at that. Dancing is her thing.

I keep wanting to type that "dancing is the one thing where nothing else about her matters," which makes me question how the show frames a few things. Hmm. Not ready to think about that yet.

Oh, well, that explains why all the kids are turning the teachers in, now doesn't it.
